Undergraduate Online Application Instructions

Should you have any questions while completing your application, you may contact the Office of Admission at 1-800-822-6363 (outside metro DC area) or 202-806-2763 (within Metro DC area). You may also direct your application questions via email to applyonline@howard.edu.

NOTE: A valid credit card is required to submit the admission application online. Your application will not be processed without the submission of a valid credit card when prompted. If a credit card is not available, the application may be downloaded from our Admission website at www.howard.edu/enrollment/admission, completed and mailed with a money order or cashier’s check.

Student Types

First-Time-in-College Applicants (FTIC): A student who has not attended a post-secondary institution prior to graduation from high school.

Transfer Applicants: If you have not completed your first semester of undergraduate study when you submit your application, you must submit your high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores or provide us with your first semester transcript immediately after you have received your grade report. We must receive a college transcript to make a final decision on your application.

International Applicants: International FTIC must provide certified CSC, CXC, GCE, WAEC, CGSE, CAPE, or final secondary records, university transcripts, mark sheets, and course syllabi or catalogs. The test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) may also be requested to complete the assessment of your admission. International Transfer applicants must have their official transcripts evaluated by the World Education Services (WES). Request the International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) (Transcript + Evaluation) Document-by-Document (FTIC) Course by Course(Tranfers) and Report only. You may also contact WES at www.wes.org or 800-937-3895 or 212-966-6311. FTIC applicants must take the SAT I or ACT.

Former Student Returning (FSR): Student who previously attended Howard University that wishes to complete the same degree level. FSRs should submit a letter indicating what activities they have been involved since they were last enrolled.

Visiting Student: A matriculating student who is currently enrolled at another institution but wishes to enroll for one academic year or less. These students must submit a letter of permission from an advisor at the current institution.

Student-at-Large: A non-matriculating student who is applying to attend the summer semester only.

Unclassified Student: A non-matriculating student who wishes to complete courses during the Spring or Fall semester. Typically students who require completion of pre-requisite courses to begin a specific course of study are considered unclassified.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Carefully read through this entire page. We also recommend printing out this page as a reference as you complete the application.
  2. Go to the Howard University Online Application.
  3. Click "Apply for Admission" and follow the instructions below.
  4. The next page requires:
    1. A login ID:
      As a first-time user, leave the login ID field BLANK.
      A login identification will automatically be created for you.
    2. A Personal Identification Number (PIN)
      You must create your PIN. Your PIN must be at least 6 characters. We recommend that you select a PIN that is alphanumeric. Once you have selected a PIN, your login ID will be created by clicking Login, and provided to you on the next page.
  5. Re-enter your PIN to verify that it is correct.
  6. The next screen asks you to select an action. Note: Once you have submitted a complete application, you can no longer make changes to that document. Submit any amendments with your required credentials directly to the Office of Admission. Please do not re-enter duplicate applications for the same major/program.
  7. Follow the instructions on each page.
  8. If you do enter all required information for a page, when you attempt to proceed to the next page, the system will prompt you to enter the missing required information.
  9. As you complete each page, you must click update. You will automatically return to the main menu. From the main menu, proceed through each form until you complete all pages.
  10. Submit your application after you have answered all questions by clicking "Application is Complete." Once you have submitted your application, print the signature page and return it along with your application fee and other required credentials (see list below) to:

Instructions for Requested Information

  1. Name
    1. Enter your foll legal name. If you are a FSR, and were known by another name, please enter your previous last name.
  2. Mailing Address
    1. Enter your mailing address on "Address Line 1" without punctuation or abbreviation.
    2. Use "Address Line 2" for apartment or floor numbers or if your entire address does not fit in "Address Line 1."
  3. Permanent Address
    1. Enter your permanent mailing address on "Address Line 1" without punctuation or abbreviation. International students must enter an address in the nation where they reside.
    2. Use "Address Line 2" for apartment or floor numbers or if your entire address does not fit in "Address Line 1."
  4. Personal Information
    1. You must indicate your gender.
    2. Enter your social security number without the use of dashes, spaces, or parentheses.
    3. Indicate any relatives (excluding spouse) who have attended or are attending Howard.
  5. Planned Course of Study
    1. Enter your intended major.
    2. If you are uncertain of the corresponding school/college for your intended major, review the major codes.
  6. High School
    1. If you do not know your high school code, go to the next field.
    2. If you do not know your exact date of graduation, enter the date as the first date of the month you will graduate, e.g., June 2005 = 060105
  7. Previous College
    1. Transfer students should indicate current post-secondary institution(s).
    2. Visiting and unclassified students must indicate information on previous/current post-secondary institution(s).
  8. Additional Information
    • If you respond yes to any one of questions 2 through 7, provide a written, detailed description of the circumstances of the incident(s).
  9. International Information
    • If you have not received your visa or do not know your visa type, leave this section blank.

Checking the Status of Your Application

To check the status of your online application after submission, return to BannerWeb admission, click on "Display Application". Click on term, a status box will appear. Go to the status section to view your application's progress and see your admission application decision.
