Registration for New Freshmen

WELCOME

Dear Students,

Please let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Sciences, and to congratulate you on selecting Howard University to educate you to enter into the fields of engineering, architecture, and computer science. We are very proud of our excellent academic reputation as well as the role we play in making each student’s college experience a rewarding one.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

A full-time student must carry no less than 12 credit hours, but in order to be placed on the Dean’s list at the end of each semester, you must carry at least 14 credit hours. An Engineering student can carry up to 21 credit hours without excess tuition.

Feel free to reduce your program to as few as 12 credits if you are uncomfortable with the number of credits listed.

PLACEMENT

— ENGLISH

The SAT II Writing Test is used for placement purposes.
   • If you scored 440 or above on this test, place yourself in English 002
   • If you scored below 440, place yourself in CAR-Verbal
   • If you have not completed the SAT II test, place yourself in English 002.

During your first week of classes the English department will administer a diagnostic examination to place unevaluated students at the appropriate level.

— MATHEMATICS

All students are required to take the Math Placement Examination prior to coming to campus in the fall. The results of this examination will be used to facilitate placement in the appropriate math course. To obtain instructions and to take the exam, go to www.howard.edu/prospectivestudents and select Math Placement Exam. Score and placement will be immediately available to you on the web once the examination is completed. (Be sure to read and follow instructions carefully.)

— ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Students who receive a score of 3 or higher on any of the Advanced Placement (AP) examinations of the College Entrance Examination Board may be eligible in the area of each examination, for advanced placement and credit toward graduation, as determined by the appropriate department. Please consult your counselor/advisor regarding specific courses and credits that you may be eligible to receive. If you receive a score of 4 or 5 in AP English Composition, place yourself in English 003.

HUMANITIES/SOCIAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Each student must complete at least 15 credits in the social science/humanities areas as follows:

1. Complete three credit hours (one course) per the University requirement in Afro-American studies;
2. Choose either the “Literature” or “Non-Literature” area from the Humanities elective at the lower level.
3. Select three credit hours (one course) from either the Humanities or Social Sciences.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Select courses based on the suggested program recommended by your major department using the placement information provided above.
2. Access the web to identify specific course numbers and course meeting times.
3. Enter your program on BISON WEB – July 8th thru July 23rd from 7:00AM to midnight. (See enclosed bookmark for registration steps.)
4. Print out your program to confirm your course selection
5. Pay your bill by August 1st, 2004.
6. E-Mail or phone your department chairperson at the appropriate address, if you need assistance.
