ABOUT
CASL
WHAT
IS CASL?
The
Center for the Advancement of Service Learning (CASL) was created
in 2000 as a unit of the Howard University Center
for Urban Progress and the College of Arts and Sciences to promote
service-learning throughout the campus. CASL is the chief liaison
between the University and the Community in matters related to
service-learning.

MISSION
The
mission of the Center for the Advancement of Service Learning
is to develop and promote initiatives at Howard University
that integrate service-learning into the university environment.

SERVICES
The Center for the Advancement of Service Learning (CASL)
• provides technical assistance to faculty in infusing service-learning
into existing courses and curricula
• sponsors workshops and seminars to train faculty and staff in
the pedagogy of service-learning and to inform them about effective
service-learning practices
• maintains a library of reference materials and sample syllabi
for service-learning developers on campus
• supports the Service Learning Living Centers at Bethune Annex
and Drew Hall to integrate service-learning into the broader
university environment
• provides funding and administrative support to faculty and staff
in integrating service-learning into courses and co-curricular
and extracurricular programs
• serves as a liaison between faculty and community partners, creating
permanent and sustainable university community partnerships to
help meet the needs of youth in the D.C. Metropolitan area
• maintains an updated directory of potential service-learning
placement sites
• helps arrange service-learning placements
• sponsors faculty and staff travel to conferences and other institutions
of higher education where participants can learn about what works
in service-learning
• maintains an updated website for rapid dissemination of internal
and external service-learning information.

HOW
IS CASL ADMINISTRERED?
The
director, Dr. Janet Griffin-Graves, supported by a Service-Learning
Assistant manages the day-to-day operations of the activities
of the program, including planning, implementation and evaluation.
A Service-Learning Advisory Committee (SLAC) informs CASL about
unmet community needs and help structure service-learning projects
so that they meet these needs. Membership includes representatives
of the Howard University faculty, student service organizations,
and community stakeholders.
