Among the nation's historically Black institutions of higher learning, Howard University and its Department of Music stand at the forefront, revered for its illustrious past and renowned as a premier provider of education for those who aspire to a career in music.

Whether in Applied Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy, Jazz Studies, Music History and Literature, Theory and Composition, or Music and Business, our stellar faculty offers talented students the highest levels of diversified, professional training. Personal attention coupled with an abundance of career building opportunities provide the kind of training that helped prepare the careers of such distinguished alumni as soprano Jessye Norman, vocalist Roberta Flack, pop singer Donnie Hathaway, pianist Geri Allen, and composers Adolphus Hailstork and Dorothy Rudd Moore. As today’s students prepare to emerge into their individual spotlights, enriching local, national, and international performing experiences await those who participate in our excellent vocal and instrumental ensembles.

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, our students emerge into their chosen fields supported by undergraduate and graduate music degrees. Scholarship assistance awaits those who demonstrate outstanding talent and high academic achievement. Admission requirements include audition, submission of SAT or ACT scores (contact Howard University Office of Admissions for minimum required scores), an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate applicants. While education costs continue to escalate throughout academia, Howard’s lower tuition and fee structure offers students and families exceptional value without compromising standards or quality.

We invite you to visit our beautiful campus with its internationally diverse family of students from all over the world. See our revitalized facilities and experience the energy of a dynamic faculty, friendly staff, and talented students.

Howard University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Learning Center that does not discriminate by race, sex, religion, or national origin.
