Monographs (Books)
These comprise the largest component of
our collection, estimated count about 20,500. The collection is specifically and directly
related to the social work curriculum. This collection is supplemented by the
collections for sociology, anthropology, and other multidisciplinary and related
collections housed in the Founders Library as well as the collections of the Health
Sciences, Business and Divinity libraries.

Dissertations
Our collection consists of
Masters dissertations dating from 1951, and Doctoral dissertations dating since 1980,
which were submitted to the Howard University School of Social Work in partial
fulfillment
of the respective degree programs. Dissertation Abstracts is available on
CD-ROM in Founders Library. You may also search
Digital Dissertations R, a database restricted to Howard customers only, which is
accessible from the Founders Library Home page

STERLING Web-based catalog
The STERLING catalog is the catalog of
the Howard University Libraries including the Social Work Library. Search under author,
title, call number, subject, keyword, or international number for a specific item.
Media
The collection of audio/visual
materials housed in the S.W. Library is small but growing and consists of a few C-Ds,
videos and tapes. Click

the video collection available in the Social Work Library. The Media Center of the University Libraries
and the Health Sciences Library also include in their collections resources related to social work.
They are fully accessible to customers
of the Social Work Library.
Microforms
The microform collection
which is housed in the Undergraduate Library consists of back issues of periodicals. Some duplicate the bound and electronic titles, and
in some cases are incomplete runs. Search the STERLING catalog for titles.
Periodicals
The collection of periodicals
comprising journals, magazines, newsletters, annuals etc. which relate directly to social
work and its components, has a recent count of just under 350 titles. Of these 170 are
currently subscribed. They are available in print (current and bound), microform and
electronic formats. Search the STERLING catalog for the title you need to see availability
and holdings, or go directly to the shelves of the Social Work Library where they are
filed alphabetically by title.
Reference Books
The library maintains a representative
collection of books in reference. It includes items which by nature and format
(encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, indexes and abstracts, almanacs, directories,
etc.) are reference, as well as those items which tend to become scarce because of
the demand made on them.
Vertical File
A collection of brochures,
single sheets, news clippings etc of materials useful to the library's customers. Of
special interest is a collection of documents and reports on welfare reform at federal and
state levels.
