Reference
Information and Directional
Assistance
Library technicians and student assistants have been trained to
answer frequently asked
questions regarding library facilities, services, and policies. This level of assistance
includes issuing ready reference tools and helping library users search Sterling, the
online public access catalog, or general directories on the Founders web site.
Research Consultation
Reference Assistance and
Consultation Services
Reference librarians handle more complex questions and provide
instruction in the use
of print and automated reference materials. Library users who have exhausted the
resources offered through basic information service are encouraged to make an
appointment with the librarian who will help attempt to track down hard-to-find
information
or guide users in formulating extensive search strategies or in using special
collections. E-Mail the Social
Work Librarian or call (202) 806-7316.
Library
Instruction
User Orientation and
Instruction Programs
The instructional program is designed to satisfy varying time
constraints and diverse
learning styles. The components include scheduled guided tours, general orientations,
instructional handouts, software demonstrations, Internet workshops, and course related
instruction.
Training in Searching
Electronic Resources
At the start of each semester, introductory sessions are held to
acquaint library users
with strategies for searching
Sterling, the online public access catalog. Internet
workshops are conducted throughout the academic year so that users can efficiently
access and critically assess the expansive array of information on the World Wide Web.
Dates and times of the training sessions are listed under the Information Technology
Class Schedules. E-Mail the Social Work Librarian or call (202) 806-7316.
