Reference and Information Services

Assistance in the use of library resources, catalogs, indexes, and databases.

Librarian-assisted computer literature search.

Library orientation and tours for new users.

Classes in literature, database and information searches.

The Librarian Liaison Program
provides an educational link between the library and the Health Sciences Division’s programs by establishing an ongoing partnership between teaching faculty and LSHSL librarians.

New LSHSL book acquisitions.

Interlibrary Loan
The Interlibrary Loan department will provide, for HUCHS affiliated patrons only, needed materials that are not owned by HSL. Patrons have the options of having items faxed, mailed or picked-up. More Information.

Circulation & Reserves
Circulation Policies apply to all borrowers of HSL materials, including faculty, students, and staff. Anyone who has borrowing privileges at HSL must be registered in the Circulation system. HSL offers assistance for patrons with disabilities. Faculty will place on reserve required reading for specific classes.

Photocopy Service
The Library has two self-service photocopying machines, located on the First Floor. The copiers require vend cards with money encoded on them. Money can only be added to vend cards in five dollar ($5.00) increments not to exceed $25.00 per vend card at the HU Bookstore on 2225 Georgia Avenue as well as the iLab (Help Desk, 202-806-0660). These machines will add $1.00 charge for the initial blank vend card.

Kaplan Multimedia Computer Lab

There are 25 computer terminals in the Dr. Harold J. Kaplan Multimedia and Presentation Room (#119) located on the first floor that can be used to access electronic databases, Internet, word processiong as well as email. Printing is unavailable and there are no floppy disk or CD-ROM drives in the library. In this lab, there are twelve study correls with audiovisual equipment for use with video or audio tape.

Services for the Handicapped
Assistance in retrieving material from the library collection may be arranged through the Reference Department. The visually handicapped may reserve a study room to work with readers or cassette players.
