MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Welcome to the Department of Communication and Culture in the John H. Johnson School of Communications. We invite you to review our course offerings with a view toward joining the large number of matriculating students and alumni who have benefited from our exciting programs and related activities.

Communication is concerned with the study of exchanging ideas and feelings through symbolic interaction. Some of the specific areas of study in communications studied in our department include intra/interpersonal, small group, organizational, intercultural, public speaking, persuasion, forensics, debate, law, language, and the aesthetic bases of human communication.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication provides education and training for those who want to develop perceptiveness and skill in the various aspects of communication between and among people. The program is structured to provide a foundation for careers in business, law, government, health, theology, teaching, training, public relations, media communications and other professions in which an understanding and utilization of the process of communication is essential.

The graduate programs in Communications emphasize the study of human discourse, employing empirical and critical methods. Using both research, rhetorical and communication theory traditions, the program utilizes comprehensive study in its generalist approach to cultural studies, health communication, problem solving and research. The training component of the graduate program prepares scholars to enter a rewarding career in the professoriate as well as other career fields.

The Department has a diverse faculty with expertise in all aspects of communication and seeks to expand the knowledge and experiential base for all students.

Thank you for considering the John H. Johnson School of Communications and the Department of Communication and Culture. We look forward to welcoming you and expect to inculcate in you the core values of Howard University: leadership, excellence, service and truth.
