UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS
Legal Communications
The program offerings in Legal Communication guide the learning experiences of our students in the communication processes as they apply to the practice of law and law related fields, such as politics, policy analysis and development, and management. The students develop knowledge of and gain experience in legal research, case analysis and brief writing. Students also develop skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, argumentation and mock trial through class preparation and participation. Legal communication majors often continue their education in law school or other graduate programs. Because of the extensive background in communications, they have also pursued careers in the business, public policy, political, entertainment and other related fields.
Speech and Applied Communication
The program in Speech and Applied Communication encourages the study of communication theory and the impact of human communication dynamics across a broad range of spectrums and a variety of situations. Students are taught the personal, cultural, social and organizational dynamics that affect and are affected by message shaping, perception, influence, persuasion and listening at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, mass and organizational levels. Students are prepared to assume management and leadership roles in a variety of agencies and organizations that are people and service driven, as well as in the public service and political arenas. Additionally, Speech and Applied Communication majors often use their acquired skills and interests in the pursuit of graduate studies leading to professions in the public or private sectors, public speaking, business, organizational and human resource management, research and the professoriate. |
