NEWSPAPERS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Journalism Department Partners with KC STAR--Again!
The Kansas City Star and the Department of Journalism at Howard University continue a long-standing relationship with another Newspapers-in-Residence grant administered by the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.
A previous grant helped strengthen the Department's core curriculum. The 2003-2004 grant of $12,000 will bring to campus professionals who can help improve the University's Converged Media Lab. The professionals will be drawn from core areas that match the Department's concentrations-editorial, broadcast, advertising/ and public relations.
The Kansas City Star-Howard University partnership will explore multimedia journalism:
- Print students will gather, report, edit and distribute stories to BlackCollegeView.com, an online publishing site that averages more than 25,000 hits daily. Content would also be available to KCStar.com.
- Broadcast news students will develop video and audio news packages for distribution to the Internet and traditional broadcast sources.
- Advertising and public relations students will develop materials to promote the media products created in the newsroom. They will also assist with developing programs to increase the advertising revenue of the newsroom and its partners.
- The Department will continue to examine multicultural content and staffing in the newsroom and online world because both Howard and The Star are committed to diversity in the workplace and the affects of diversified coverage.
