    2400 6th Street, NW

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  1. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
  2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is required for admission into the graduate program.
  3. Students without a BA in film can be admitted during the spring semester. In addition, students lacking a B average must completed (with a grade of B or better) the following prerequisite courses or their equivalents prior to being eligible for enrollment in the program:

Scriptwriting I
Cinematography I
    Total
3 credits

All of the prerequisite courses listed above are offered during the Spring semester. However if a student elects to enter the program during the Fall semester, only two of the courses, Scriptwriting I & Cinematography I, are offered. Thus, the remaining three classes would have to be taken during the Spring semester.

NOTE: The above course requirement may be waived in part or whole by the committee. Persons receiving such a waiver, however, must make up any and all deficiencies and any and all courses taken to meet such a deficiency will not count toward graduation.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

To earn the MFA in Film degree, candidates must

  1. Maintain grade point average of B (more than two C’s in the area of specialization will not be accepted).
  2. Complete a minimum of 60 credits.
  3. Complete one of the following Thesis projects:

    a) feature-length screenplay

GRADES AND ACADEMIC STANDING
  1. Accumulative average of 3.0 (B) is required for graduation.
  2. A student must maintain a B average in all courses. A student accumulating more than fifteen (15) credits with grades below B (3.0) will be dropped from the program.
  3. A student whose cumulative average drops below 3.0 during any semester, shall be placed on academic probation.
  4. Students failing to remove probationary status by the end of the required two semesters in residence shall be suspended.
  5. A semester in which a student totally withdraws or drops all classes in which he/she is enrolled will be considered as part of the probationary period unless the Graduate Studies Committee of the John H. Johnson School of Communications rules otherwise.
  6. Any student who has received a grade of C, D, or F in a course may repeat that course for the purpose of improving that grade. In such cases, a single grade – the lowest – with its attendant credits shall be discounted in the calculation of the student’s cumulative average. In the event of two identical grades, only one shall be discounted. All grades are recorded on the transcript.
TRANSFER OF CREDIT TO THE MASTER OF FINE ARTS PROGRAM

All courses required for the Master of Fine Arts degree shall be taken at Howard University, except that the department may recommend to the Graduate Studies Committee course work taken in another graduate school and request that it be approved up to a maximum of six credits. No correspondence courses may be accepted for credit.

Credit will be given only for courses pursued within five years of the term in which the student is prepared to graduate. An exception to this regulation may be granted upon the written recommendation of the student’s advisor, based upon special examination of the candidate, and the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of Radio, Television and Film.
