Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau - Biography
Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau is the 16 th president of Howard University. In May 2008, the Howard University Board of Trustees announced him as their unanimous choice to lead the institution into a new phase of growth as the nation’s premier Historically Black College and University. He began his tenure on August 1. Dr. Ribeau came to Howard from Bowling Green State University where he was president for 13 years. As president, he strengthened the academic enterprise while supporting innovative faculty research and instructional programs aimed at developing partnerships, student leadership skills and a values-based curriculum. The Scholarship of Engagement Initiative, the President’s Leadership Academy, Partnerships for Community Action, and BGeXperience: Vision and Values are just a few programs that he launched to revitalize and build community. Within three years of a planned five-year campaign, he raised over $115 million of the $120 million goal for the Building Dreams: The Centennial Campaign for Bowling Green State University for scholarships, endowed chairs, capital improvements and academic program enhancements. Additionally, Dr. Ribeau upgraded Bowling Green State University's communications and computing technology as well as encouraged collaboration with other institutions to increase operational and cost efficiencies. He also championed collaborative research and instructional programs. One example is the nationally recognized Center for Photochemical Sciences, which received a $2 million Wright Capital Project grant in 2003 from the state for the creation of a laboratory to work with business, industry and nonprofit organizations to bring innovations in the photochemical sciences to the marketplace. Another is Partnerships for Community Action, a small grant program that underwrites activities initiated by faculty, student and community groups who come together to achieve a common educational goal or provide a special service to those in need. In 2003, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators honored Dr. Ribeau with its President's Award for "courage and leadership in guiding Bowling Green State University to develop a community focused on student learning and designed to educate the whole student by taking their personal and intellectual growth into consideration." Dr. Ribeau serves on the boards of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) and Worthington Industries. His past service included the Ohio's Higher Education Funding Commission, the Board of Directors for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Inter-University Council of Presidents, the Bowling Green and Toledo Chambers of Commerce, the boards of United Way, the Greater Toledo Urban League, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Regional Growth Partnership, the Andersons Inc. (Maumee, OH), and Convergys Corporation. Raised in Detroit, President Ribeau received his bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1971. He earned master's and doctoral degrees in speech communication from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1973 and 1979, respectively. He began his teaching career in 1976 as a professor of communication studies at California State University, Los Angeles. Eight years later, after being honored as an outstanding teacher and student adviser, he became chair of the university's Pan African Studies Department. He held that position until 1987, when he was named dean of undergraduate studies at California State University, San Bernardino. Three years later, he became dean of the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus. In 1992, he was named vice president for academic affairs at California Polytechnic at Pomona, a position he held until he became president at Bowling Green State University.
