Meet our Donors

Herbert L. Blackman, Jr.
B.S., Howard University, 1949
Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Air Force, 1949
M.S., Purdue University, 1954

When Mr. Herbert Blackman began his college search in the 1940s, opportunities for African-Americans in higher education were limited. At that time, he decided upon the engineering program at Howard University - where he knew he would receive a strong education in an atmosphere accepting of diversity. "Howard accepted me and prepared me well for a 45-year career in engineering," he recalls. "Today, Howard still provides first-rate preparation for highly qualified African-American students to enter the world of work and to make outstanding contributions to our nation."

Since graduating from Howard with a degree in civil engineering, Mr. Blackman has traveled the world with the U.S. Air Force - he served on active duty from 1951 to 1971, during which time he took part in the construction of airfields, missile sites, and laboratory testing facilities. From there, he went to work for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, and relocated again to California in 1984 to accept a position with Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical. He retired in 1994 to spend his time with his wife, two daughters and two grandsons; he enjoys tutoring at his church and is a member of the San Diego Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Howard University Alumni Club of San Diego.

Mr. Blackman has been supporting Howard financially since the late 1970s, calling on Ford and Teledyne Ryan to match his contributions to the University. In his opinion, "it is incumbent on all alumni to make financial contributions to continue the legacy of providing a superb education."
