LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., M.D. Charles Drew Professor of Surgery College of Medicine As a former President of the American Cancer Society and American College of Surgeons and current Chairman of President George Bush's Cancer Panel, Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., is a distinguished and much-lauded member of the Howard community. After 42 years of teaching for the Howard University College of Medicine, third-year students still quake at the thought of presenting and defending their surgical cases to him each week. He firmly believes that students and faculty in all disciplines should practice the standard of "equanimity under duress" in order to preserve the tranquility to do what is most appropriate in all circumstances. Though his list of accolades and his philosophies is formidable, some of Dr. LaSalle's most notable accomplishments include his devoted history to cancer research - in particular, he has studied surgical oncology with a special interest in breast cancer and the effects of cancer upon African Americans - and his membership in numerous professional associations whose aim is to further cancer research. Dr. Leffall describes teaching at Howard as his greatest honor, and he truly delights in the intellectually-charged and culturally-diverse atmosphere on campus. "What makes Howard special to me is the fact that there is a feeling of family. Although Howard is a predominantly Black university, there are students and faculty members of all races and ethnic groups. This diversity increases the attractiveness of Howard and what we can learn in this environment." In 1992, Dr. Leffall was named the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery, occupying the first endowed chair in the College of Medicine's Department of Surgery. He supports the creation of endowed professorships and lectureships that make it possible for Howard to recruit and maintain the highest quality faculty members, and is grateful for the charitable contributions that enable Howard to maintain endowed chairs. |
