Rebecca Crouch, Class of 2004 Major: Mathematics Hometown: Chicago, IL Rebecca Crouch knows perhaps as well as anyone the value of education and the importance of educational opportunities for all students who wish to learn. Rebecca and her mother have struggled to afford the cost of attending Howard, primarily paying tuition through the help of the PLUS Loan for parents and an academic merit scholarship awarded by Howard. "After my sophomore year, I considered not even returning to Howard," she recalls. "The burden on my mother just became far too great." Then she saw a poster on the wall in the School of Education for the Helen Matthews Rand Endowed Scholarship. "It was on that day that my life changed forever." Rebecca's list of academic achievements is long - she has made both the College of Arts and Sciences and the National Dean's lists for 2001 and 2002; is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and National Society for Collegiate Scholars; and participates in the College of Arts and Sciences' Honors Program. She also volunteers for America's Promise, an organization that provides inner city children the chance to engage with students at Howard. A mathematics major with a minor in secondary education, Rebecca hopes to teach and, with a master's in curriculum and instruction, write and illustrate mathematics textbooks. "Ultimately, I plan to open a community center in the inner city of Chicago. I want to provide an alternative option for children in the inner city - I want to be their outlet." Teaching is a passion for Rebecca: "I want to emulate every teacher that has made a significant difference in my life." The Helen Matthews Rand Endowed Scholarship has enabled Rebecca to complete her education at Howard University and attain her professional goals. The scholarship program, in its fourth year at Howard, promises to fuel Howard's goal to become a premier national center for urban education. The $1 million endowed scholarship fund was established by Mr. A. Barry Rand in honor of his late mother, Ms. Helen Matthews Rand, a long-time teacher in the D.C. school district. |
