President's Message

Peace and blessings, All!

Guided by its three R’s (Recruitment, Revenue/Resources and Reputation) and its pursuit for cooperation and collaboration during this administration, HUAA pushes forward. Through monthly updates, many HUAA readers learn about areas in which Alma Mater requires serious attention from alumni and friends. Thanks to Noel Manyindo via Alumna Jamila Jorden, I can share the following positive online links about Howard University:

Alumna Laurette LeGendre strongly urge our alumnae to join the Essence Sister Study, a breast cancer study. As of February 2007 only 1500 African American females had joined the study, whose goal is 50,000 participants. On February 26, 2007 32,889 had registered. For more information, kindly log onto http://www.sisterstudy.org/English/index1.htm.

Dissemination of an article on HBCU graduation rates and recent evidence of shrinking donor scholarship monies sparked dialogue from as far as Panama, via Alum William Keene. An article from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education ranked Alma Mater fifth in the rates listing at 58%. Our Office of Records claims 70%. More of the article can be found at http://www.jbhe.com/preview/winter07preview.html.

As to the shrinking scholarship monies reported by a Delaware parent, I learned that more than 1500 student applications were received for only 300 donor-based scholarships. University Vice President Ecton recommended that we alumni contribute generously to the University-Wide Annual Scholarship Fund that is utilized for students who have financial needs. Students may also compete for other specific use scholarships which can be found on our website at http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/donor.htm.
