Scholarship Fund
2008-2009 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
The
Brenda Lawson Brown/Howard University Alumni Association
Scholarship Fund was established by the Howard
University Alumni Association for the purpose
of giving financial support to Howard University
undergraduate students who demonstrate financial
need. The fund is named in honor of the late Brenda
Lawson Brown who gave many years of devoted service
to Howard University, the Department of Alumni
Affairs, and the Howard University Alumni program.
The
fund is administered by the following guidelines:
1.
Only Howard University students with all parts
of a completed application received by the stated
deadline will be considered.
2. A non-renewable scholarship in the amount
of tuition will be granted annually to one undergraduate
student to be used during the funding/fiscal
year of 2009.
3. “Financial Need” is the first
priority in the selection process.
4. Students must have a completed Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file indicating
eligibility and approval for federal and/or
other financial assistance.
5. Where necessary, interviews of applicants
will be scheduled by the selection committee.
Applicants required for interview will be notified
to schedule an interview date on campus.
6. The recipient must have a minimum grade point
average of 2.5 and be in good standing with
the University.
7. Upon notification of selection, the recipient
will provide a current photograph and photo
release statement for issuance of a press release.
8. After selection, the recipient is required
to send a thank you letter to the Alumni Association
at 607 Howard Place, NW, Washington, DC 20059.
9. The Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment
will administer the fund and provide the Howard
University Alumni Association with the required
information regarding the recipient’s
need for financial assistance.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The
application for the Brenda Lawson Brown/Howard
University Alumni Association Scholarship includes
five parts.
1.
Completion of the Scholarship Application Form
2. Student Essay/Personal Statement
3.
Two Letters of Recommendation
4. Official Howard University Transcript
5. Howard University Financial Aid Certification
Statement (must be obtained from the HU Financial
Aid Office)
6. HUAA Scholarship Committee Authorization
and Release Form
All
parts of the application must be received by
March 8th, 2008
in
order for the application to be considered complete.
Scholarship Application -
Please
type or print clearly. All sections should be
completed as accurately as possible. (Please
note that misrepresentations in any area of
the application may result in disqualification).
HUAA Scholarship Committee Authorization and Release
Form -
Please
type or print clearly. All sections should be
completed accurately. Return the original form
to the Howard University Office of Financial
Aid for the completion of the financial aid
certification. A copy of the form must be submitted
with the original application packet.
Student Essay/Personal Statement
-
In
addition to the scholarship application form,
students are required to include a one-to-two
page essay/personal statement. Essays should
be typewritten and double-spaced. This section
of the application enables students to offer
the selection committee a complete view of their
academic history and potential. The essay should
include a discussion of educational and professional
goals, campus involvement that demonstrates
commitment to Howard’s legacy, and any
personal challenges faced that the selection
committee should consider.
Letters of Recommendation (2) -
Two letters of recommendation are required from
individuals who are familiar with your educational,
professional, and service background. (Please
note that recommendations may NOT come from
relatives. Appropriate references include teachers
and professors, community and social service
professionals, religious leaders, supervisors,
etc.). Letters of recommendations should be
either placed in a sealed envelope with the
recommender’s signature across the seal
and included in your application package or
sent directly to the selection committee in
the same manner for receipt by the deadline
date.
Official
Transcript -
An official transcript from Howard University
to date should be either enclosed with your
application or sent to the selection committee
directly by the university.

The scholarship award will be presented at the
HUAA annual alumni volunteer awards reception
on
May
9, 2008.
Notification
of the selection committee’s decisions will
be made by
April
30, 2008.
