Father Darryl F. James is currently the rector of Messiah-St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church located in the Avalon Park Community Church of Chicago, Illinois and Chair of the Alumni Association Membership Committee. His journey in ministry began at Howard University as a student participating with Campus Ministries. Following graduation in 1976 with a Bachelors of Arts from Howard University's School of Liberal Arts, Father James matriculated at the Interdenominational Center in Atlanta, Georgia for an experiential year. He was recruited by the Rt. Reverend John M. Burgess, the first African American Diocesan Bishop in the Episcopal Church, to Yale University where he received the Master of Divinity Degree in 1979. Having been ordained
an Episcopal priest for sixteen years, a part of Father James' ministry
largely involves exposing youth to opportunities in higher education.
He has sponsored numerous college tours to Howard University for youth
from communities in Detroit and Chicago. Father James has served as
president for both the Howard University Alumni Club of Detroit and
Chicago. From 1995-2000, Father James served in the capacity as Regional
Representative and Regional Chair for Region IV. He was given the coveted
"Distinguished Alumni Award" for Howard University by NAFEO.
In the Chicagoland community, Father James is known affectionately as
"Mr. Howard." For more
