Message from the HUAA President

Greetings Bison Family,November picture

On April 17, 2009, Howard University celebrated the inauguration of its 16th president, Dr. Sydney A. Ribeau. I was honored to speak at the inauguration ceremony on behalf of the Alumni Association.  The event was historic, the ceremony was distinguished and the remarks by guest speaker, Dr. William H. Cosby, Jr. were both stimulating and entertaining.  Click here to view the webcast of the inauguration ceremony.

I heartily thank the alumni of Greater Los Angeles for being such gracious hosts during my visit to their city.  Their scholarship fundraising golf tournament, 9 on the Ninth, was full of fun, networking and competition.  I also thank those alumni who pulled out their checkbooks and joined HUAA on the spot!  Your support is greatly appreciated.

The Howard University commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009.  We will then receive a new group of alumni to strengthen our alumni base.  Let's welcome them and let them know that their connection to Howard has not ended.  As alumni, they will begin a new experience with Howard as we support the University together.

In Bison Spirit,

Kimberly C. Singleton
President
Howard University Alumni Association

Alumni Host High School Males on Campus Tour
In fulfilling HUAA's commitment to motivate young Black men to attend our Alma Mater, twenty-two young men were invited and visited Howard on April 17th for a campus tour. They were mostly juniors from Bronx, NY's all-male high schools: Eagle Academy (supported by 100 Black Men) and Urban Assembly Academy of History and Citizenship for Young Men. Activities included presentations from faculty, alumni, and students and attending President Ribeau's inauguration. The students ate lunch in Howard's cafeteria and then witnessed the probates of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority "coming out" on campus.  This trip truly gave the students a taste of campus life.  This campus tour was arranged by Akil Kamau, HUAA Black Male Initiative Co-Chairperson and creator/co-founder of the Forethought Program. For a slide show of the visit, click here.

HUAA Hosts Alumni Events in Houston

Houston alumni attended an intimate dinner to welcome and discuss HUAA with President Kimberly Singleton on March 7th. The event was an opportunity for President Singleton to discuss HUAA goals, the current relationship with the University and its new Administration, and to listen to concerns of alumni.

April 7th was Howard University Alumni Night at the Toyota Center as the Houston Rockets played the Orlando Magics. The final score was Orlando Magics 83 and Houston Rockets 93. This event was the first in a series of events and opportunities for Houston HUAA alumni to partner with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets support HUAA and are eager to assist the Association in increasing membership in the Region.

On May 1st, HUAA and Florida A&M University (FAMU) alumni, along with the MIA Investment Club (www.miainvestmentclub.com) will host a mixer at the Grooves Restaurant (formerly Drexler's) to network, discuss the state of the current markets and  learn more about investing, financial planning and investment opportunities.  Houston entrepreneurs will also present at the mixer.  HUAA members, Elgin Wells and George Wyche, Jr., will speak at the event. The MIA Investment Club networks with other investment clubs in Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, New York and Houston.  HUAA member Terri Rogers is an officer of the MIA Investment Club.  For more information, email dsrross@aol.com or desireeross99@hotmail.com.
