An Undergraduate Summer Research Program in Science and Biotechnology
 The Howard University Amgen Scholars Program (HUSAP) will offer students enrolled in four-year colleges and universities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and other U.S.territories the chance to participate in a science and bio-technology summer program at Howard University.
During their summer at Howard University, Howard University Amgen Scholars will:

Take part in important research projects, gaining hands-on lab experience and contributing to the advancement of science;

Interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the nation’s top academic scientists;

Attend scientific seminars, workshops, and other networking activities ;

Take a course geared toward strengthening basic writing, technical writing, and thesis and proposal development skills; and
-
Participate in a mid-summer symposium devoted to research in the biotechnology industry.
All student expenses will be paid, including travel to and from the University, and students will be given a stipend of $3,000 for the summer.

Program Overview
The Howard University Amgen Scholars Program (HUASP) is designed to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of undergraduates pursuing degrees in science and engineering related disciplines, with an emphasis on under-represented students, and their subsequent enrollment in graduate master’s and doctoral degree programs
The Program
 Each summer, 21 undergraduate students from Howard University and other universities and colleges across the nation will participate in the Howard University Amgen Scholars Program. Ten of the students will be currently enrolled at Howard and 11 will come from other institutions. During the summer program, Howard-Amgen Scholars will be mentored by members of the Howard University faculty during an eight-week summer program. Under the direction of faculty members, Howard-Amgen Scholars will conduct research on a topic of their choice and complete a research report (research paper or poster presentation).Howard University has 25 B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs, which are offered in six major academic departments and delivered by 182 full-time faculty members and several adjunct faculty members
Symposium
At the end of the eight-week summer session, Howard University Amgen Scholars will present the results of their research at a symposium at Howard University. Also, students will be encouraged to submit the results of their research to professional conferences and undergraduate research conferences during the academic year. The Amgen Scholars will also participate in an annual three-day symposium with students from all over the country where students will hear firsthand from leading scientists from industry and academia.
Coursework
In addition to their research, the Howard University Amgen Scholars will take a writing course, designed to strengthen writing and composition skills, with a focus on technical and scientific writing. The writing course will include specific sessions on the writing section of the GRE, plus a thesis development component, which will focus on formulating a written thesis statement, abstracts and developing ideas for academic and journal submission.
Financial
Howard University Amgen Scholars will receive a $3,000 stipend, housing and meals, health insurance and travel expenses to and from Howard University.
Eligibility Criteria
 Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for admission to the Howard University Amgen Scholars Program (HUSAP):
- U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident;
- Enrolled in good academic standing as a sophomore (with at least 4 quarters or 3 semesters of college experience), junior or non-graduating seniors who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies) at Howard University or another accredited university or college in the U.S., Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories;
- Have a cumulative graduate point average of 3.2 or higher; and
- Have an interest in pursing a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. degree.
To be considered for admission to the program, students must submit the following documents in addition to the online application:
- An official transcript from each institution of higher education where the student has matriculated;
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty members; and
- A statement of interest outlining the student’s academic, research and career goals and how participation in the program will benefit the student.
The 2008 program will be from May 26, 2008-August 1, 2008*
*Alternate dates are available for students on an academic quarter system.
