Continuing Student 2009-2010 Financial Aid Checklist

Please review the following checklist to assist in the processing of your 2009-2010 financial aid. It is important that you complete these requirements before you leave for your summer break.

This is a brief checklist of the documentation that may be needed to complete your financial aid file before the awarding process. Please be advised that you may be required to submit additional information not listed below if you are selected for the Federal Verification process by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • File 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you have not filed a FAFSA, please do so as soon as possible by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • Review Student Aid Report (SAR) for accuracy.
  • Respond to and return all requests (this information should only be submitted if requested) , including:
    • Verification Worksheet (Dependent or Independent),
    • Student’s signed 2008 Federal Tax Return
    • Parent’s signed 2008 Federal Tax Return if you are dependent, and/or
    • Spouse’s signed 2008 Federal Tax Return if you married.

  • Have parents submit Undergraduate Federal Direct Plus Request Form (for dependent students only). If your parents plan to apply for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan to assist you in offsetting your educational expenses, be sure he/she submits legible copies of his/her social security card, valid driver’s license and other required documents if applicable.
  • Submit College Enrollment Verification Form for dependent students with siblings enrolled in college at least part-time or independent students with children enrolled at least part-time in college.
  • Review Spring 2009 grades for accuracy. Determine if you are meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. The Office of Financial Aid will notify you if you have been placed on financial aid probation or financial aid suspension. Grades may be viewed via BisonWeb.
  • Submit award or approval notices for any scholarships, grants, and loans received from sources other than Howard University by July 31, 2009. Notices submitted after August 3, 2009 may not be used for registration or validation purposes.
  • Awarded applicants of the Donor Scholarship must submit with their resume, a “Thank You” letter, and 4 by 6 headshot by August 3, 2009.
