"Making Money From Poor People and Prisons: What Are We Doing?"
(Lecture/Discussion)

Theme of "Civic Equality in the 21st Century: The Political Process, Education, Economic Power, and Individual Rights," focusing on the prison system, this program is titled "Making Money From Poor People and Prisons: What Are We Doing?" This year's programs are being organized by Elaine Jones, former president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Joining Jones on Feb. 20 will be Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the non-profit Equal Justice Initiative, located in Montgomery, Ala.
Stevenson and his colleagues at the Equal Justice Initiative provide legal representation to defendants who by virtue of bias in the legal system and inequality in the economic and political system are subject to unfair treatment before the law. They have worked on extensively on behalf of children who are charged with felonies and treated as adults. In addition they also collaborate with advocacy groups engaged in reforming the criminal justice system.
This is the fourth lecture in this year's series of Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Lectures.
