Started in 1980, Howard University Television is the first African-American owned and operated non-commercial television station in the United States.
   WHUT broadcasts more than 3,500 hours of public affairs and educational programming per year. The stations has won 11 Emmys and 8 CEBA (Communications Excellence to Black audiences) Awards as well as other honors.
