The original proposed name for Howard University was the Howard Normal and Theological Institute for Education of Teachers and Preachers.
Alumna Patricia Bath was the first Black female doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention. Bath created a method for removing cataract lenses that transformed eye surgery by using a laser device.

Now it's your turn to test your knowledge. The first five people to respond correctly to the following questions will receive a copy of Legacy: Treasures of Black History.  Remember, both answers must be correct to qualify. Please send your response to ouc@howard.edu.

  • Name two alumni who are currently playing in the National Football League.
  • What alumnus popularized the term "Black Power?”
