Wayne
Frederick, M.D., director of the
Howard University Cancer Center and division
chief for General Surgery at Howard University
Hospital, was selected as one of Diverse:
Issues in Higher Education’s standout
scholars for 2011. Frederick, who also serves
as associate dean for Clinical Strategy and
Operations at the College of Medicine, is
one of 12 scholars from a variety of institutions
and disciplines who will be profiled in the
Jan. 6 edition of the magazine. (Ceasar) |

Ethelbert Miller, renowned poet and
director of the African American Resource
Center, was honored for his life’s work
on Nov. 19, at the Gelman Library at George
Washington University. The celebration was
in honor of Miller’s 60th birthday.

The
Howard University Center for Wellness
and Weight Loss Surgery has been
accredited as a center of Excellence by the
Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation
Program of the American College of Surgeons
(ACS). This designation means that the center
has met the essential criteria that ensure
it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric
surgery care program and that its institutional
performance meets the requirements outlined
by ACS BSCN. |

Moriya
Morris, a junior in the School of
Architecture, was one of 12 students recognized
for their academic achievements and awarded
$2,500 grants. She received the 9th Annual
Paul Brott Scholarship Award from the Society
of American Military Engineers. Morris is
a member of the Engineering, Architecture
and Computer Sciences Student Council and
is actively involved in the National Organization
of Minority Architecture Students. |

Alexander
Pope, a junior in the College of Dentistry,
received the overall best presentation award at
the Hinman Student Research Symposium for his presentation
on “submandibular gland morphogenesis.”
The symposium is a national meeting that features
oral and poster presentations of research studies
by dental students and graduate trainees from dental
schools across North America. |
