Hundreds of pharmacists and other health care professionals will enter the grand ballroom of the Greenbelt Marriott in Maryland on April 12, for an event that has become a hallmark for the Pharmacy Alumni Association—its annual scholarship gala. This year’s theme is "Values, Visions and Victories."

The gala has been the association’s signature event since 1982 and allows alumni the opportunity to network and honor the achievements of distinguished colleagues and faculty members, while raising funds to provide scholarships to students in the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program. There are approximately 2,000 College of Pharmacy alumni.

“We have a very active membership and have been able to raise more than a half a million dollars over the last 20 years,” says Frederick Munford Sr., the association’s historian and past president.

Munford, who has been involved with the association since he graduated in 1967, says donations from alumni and institutional donors have been key to providing much-needed financial support to the College of Pharmacy and its students while continuing its philanthropic legacy. Because of the dedication of the association, College of Pharmacy students have opportunities to receive financial aid through the Pharmacy Alumni Association Scholarship and the Chauncey I. Cooper Fund. "It’s always a great inspiration to recognize our own and the work they’ve done."

“The enthusiasm within the committee and within the college has been key to providing opportunities for the program,” says Wallene Bullard, Pharm.D., the association’s president. “It gives alumni an opportunity to provide financial support to their alma mater.”

For more than 25 years, the association has been honoring notable alumni and faculty. This year, Leroy Bradley, the association’s treasurer, will receive the alumni award and Patricia Noumedem will receive the faculty award.

“It’s always a great inspiration to recognize our own and the work they’ve done,” Munford says.

This includes recognizing one of their oldest living members, Talmage Wilson, who has been with the alumni association since its inception in 1959 and served as treasurer for almost 50 years. (In 1986, Wilson was honored with the Outstanding Alumni Award for his many years of service.)

Bullard notes that communication is key to sharing the association’s history and urges all alumni to keep their information up-to-date with the University.

“Being one of the oldest and longest-standing constituent units at Howard, we have a rich tradition in history that we have chronicled,” Bullard says. “We have an amazing legacy and we look forward to showcasing the impact that the Pharmacy Alumni Association has made over the last 55 years.”

The annual scholarship gala will be held on April 12 at the Greenbelt Marriott in Maryland. This year’s keynote speaker is Wayne A.I. Frederick, M.D., interim president of Howard University. Pauline Guthrie, Pharm.D., and Frederick Munford Sr., D.D.M., are this year’s gala chairs.
