Five members of the Howard family traveled to South Africa to help mark the centenary of the African National Congress.
Earlier this month, five members of the Howard University family traveled to South Africa as delegates with the USA-ANC Centenary Committee to mark the 100-year anniversary of the African National Congress and Howard’s historic ties to South Africa.

Committee co-chairs Jean Bailey, Ph.D., professor of education, and Joseph Harris, Ph.D., distinguished professor of history, led the team to Bloemfontein, Mangaung, South Africa—the founding place of the ANC—for a three-day celebration that attracted dozens of heads of state and more than 100,000 visitors from around the world. They were joined by Melbourne Cummings, Ph.D., professor of communications and culture; Charles Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor of history and Judi Moore Latta, Ph.D., executive director of Communications and Marketing and professor of radio/TV/film—all members of HURSAP, the Howard University Republic of South Africa Project.

Also part of the U.S. delegation were representatives from the National Bar Association and the National Association of Black Journalists, as well as individuals active in the anti-Apartheid movement—among them, former U.N. Ambassador (and alumnus) Andrew Young, former Washington, D.C. congressional delegate Walter Fauntroy and Rev. Jesse Jackson.

As the oldest liberation movement on the continent of Africa, the ANC marked the anniversary of its founding in 1912 with signature events including an interfaith vigil, intercultural celebrations, a presidential centennial gala, the lighting of a centenary flame and a seminal speech by South African President Jacob Zuma.

The yearlong celebration will continue in both South Africa and the U.S. through 2012. Howard will serve as a coordinator of domestic events while continuing to build and expand research partnerships, service-learning opportunities and archival connections with South Africa.
