OHR Employee Spotlight: Kathryn Brown

Kathryn Brown has been employed at Howard University for 24 years. As the program development manager for the Professional Development and Leadership Academy (PDLA), Brown designs curriculum, conducts learning and development experiences, collaborates with administrators to develop training solutions for performance gaps and facilitates the New Hire Workforce Engagement seminars. A major initiative that Brown provides instruction on is C.A.R.E.S. (an acronym for Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Service), the Howard University Health Sciences customer service initiative.

“I like to think of myself as the customer experience management and CARES 'cheerleader' for Howard University,” Brown says.

Originally from Bronx, N.Y., Brown graduated from William Howard Taft High School (Bronx, N.Y.), and attended Salem College (Salem, W.V.) and the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning. In 1989 she began working at Howard as the program assistant for the Annenberg Honors Program in the School of Communications and transitioned to work in PDLA in 1997.

“My fondest memory at Howard was when the first class of students graduated from the Annenberg Honors Program,” Brown says.  “I remain in touch with many of them, all of whom have excelled in their field.”

In her free time, Brown serves in Christian education for the A.M.E. Zion Church denomination, focusing on leaders, youth, young adults and women in the church.

“I am very fortunate to also do for the church what I do at Howard,” Brown says. “I love creating learning and development opportunities in the church."

It is also a priority for her to spend time with her mom, godchildren and extended family.

“I have been richly blessed with many best moments in my life,” Brown says. “It is difficult to choose one, but I would have to say that preaching my initial sermon in 1989 was the best moment of my life because it led to many wonderful experiences that I have had nurturing others in their faith, traveling, developing creative ministries and forming intimate relationships with numerous youth and young adults.”

If Brown had a chance to give everyone in the world one piece of advice, it would be to build hope on things eternal. “I have learned that people, positions, possessions and power all come and go,” Brown says. “While I am not fond of ‘churchy’ clichés, I do know that ‘only what you do for Christ will last!’”
