Admission

General Admission Requirements

The Department of Chemical Engineering shares the same policy for admission with the entire School of Engineering and Computer Science. The admission policy is as follows:

Prospective students should submit an application, an official transcript of the secondary school record and character recommendations from the school principal or counselor. An applicant must be a graduate of a secondary school or have equivalent credentials. The secondary school program should consist of at least 15 units including the following minimum units: English, 3; algebra, 2; geometry, 1; trigonometry, 1; history, or civics, 1; and science, 2. A unit represents one year of study in any subject in a secondary school.

Applicants must furnish the results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I and SAT II in Mathematics). Admission is based on an evaluation of the academic record, test scores and letters of recommendation. Transfer students must have completed at least 12 semester hours of course work including mathematics and science. International applicants must submit a transcript of all work taken at other institutions (secondary and collegiate) and must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a cumulative score of 550 or better.

Graduate Program Admission

Students admitted to the program usually will have a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from an accredited chemical engineering department. Admission is based primarily on the achievement of a 2.75 or better grade point average (out of 4.0) in all undergraduate chemical engineering courses, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Applicants holding an undergraduate degree in chemistry from an accredited university and who have completed chemistry, physics and mathematics courses required for a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering at Howard may be admitted on a one-year special program of "course work only" in preparation for transfer to the master's degree program. A grade point average of 2.75 (out of 4.0) in all chemical engineering courses is required for students in this program.

Students applying to the Department of Chemical Engineering must obtain an application for admission from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. These applications are available online at http://www.gs.howard.edu. Deadlines are March 1 for the fall semester, November 1 for the spring semester, and March 15 for the summer sessions.

A complete application consists of

  1. the application form;
  2. two copies of official undergraduate transcripts;
  3. a vitae;
  4. three letters of recommendation;
  5. the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores;
  6. scores of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for foreign students whose native language is not English.
