Overview: Structure of the Institute
Institute activities stress the importance of acquiring leadership skills grounded
in the core values used by all leaders. The activities of the Institute include
the leadership lecture, professional development workshops, plenary sessions,
and an executive panel discussion. Activities of the Institute are a structured
process and the workshops are building blocks that set the foundation for each
session. Viewed in this way, student participants are able to understand that
leadership is a responsible action of those who accept leadership roles in society
– not simply positional roles.
Students are encouraged to implement their new skills immediately and to lead
others by example. Whether our graduates are employed in the private or the
public sector, the Institute gives them tools to surmount social, intellectual
and professional challenges.
The Student Leadership Institute begins on a Friday with a panel discussion
and leadership lecture by an outstanding individual who exemplifies leadership
qualities. The Institute continues on Saturday with workshops and a luncheon
speaker. There are opportunities for students to interact with workshop facilitators
and speakers. In addition, valuable door prizes are awarded to students who
attend.

Second Day: Workshops
”Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”
In this workshop, participants learn holistic and integrated approaches to
mastering personal and interpersonal experiences. Students gain knowledge to
become more proactive and to identify their personal missions. Exercises and
discussions teach participants ways manage time and resources more effectively,
improve negotiating skills, and to use synergy for building teams that incorporate
wellness as part of their life and work environment.
“Leadership 101”
This workshop introduces basic leadership skills. Upon completion of the workshop,
the participants understand the importance of implementing strategies that lead
to a shared vision, sense of community, dedication to mission objectives and
the value of diversity. The workshop serves as an aid in the development of
interpersonal and communication skills and the identification of internal drives
that leaders possess.
“Effective Presentation Skills”
This workshop introduces basic public speaking and presentation skills that
enhance and strengthen professional communication skills. The focus is on effective
techniques for interpersonal, small group, and public communication settings.
Through exposure to communication theory, participants learn new skills to enhance
their public speaking and presentation skills.
Notes on Workshop Design
Each workshop has specific objectives that support the goals of the Leadership
Institute. The workshops provide insight on how to become an effective leader
and are highly informative and participatory. Student participants are given a
training manual. The sessions are conducted by experienced professionals from
Howard University (Leadership Academy) and the sponsoring agency. The
Howard University Mission and Core Values are used as the basis for designing
the Student Leadership Workshops. The following criteria are applied to organizing
and presenting workshops: | ·
| The
workshops reflect training that is useful in the “real-world.” | | ·
| Training
tools incorporated into the workshops facilitate ongoing learning, such as valuable
resources, and self-help materials. | | ·
| Workshops are geared
toward “intentional learning.” |
