Charles D. Moody, President and CEO, Moody Construction
Luncheon Speaker - CEACS Student Leadership Institute – October 18, 2003

The luncheon speaker on the following day was Charles D. Moody, president and CEO, Moody Construction. Mr. Moody, an alumnus of Howard, graduated from the School of Architecture in 1981. As the luncheon speaker, he shared much of his personal growth and development with the audience. His overall presentation was autobiographical -- he tracked his success and highlighted the challenges he faced and what steps he took to overcome them.

Moody spoke about his philanthropic interest in helping the community by giving back. He talked about using his talents to help other reach their dreams. Emphasizing that mentorship is an important ingredient of leadership, he encouraged students to think back and remember those who help them to succeed. He remarked that a leader is always open to opportunity and prepared when it comes.

Moody concluded with the ABCs of success. He encouraged the students to aim high and remember that goal setting is another key to effective leadership and asked the students to believe that they have the ability to achieve. Moody concluded his remarks by asking the students to commit to their goals and remember that there will be ups and downs, hills and valleys; but through it all, they would be victorious if they persevered.Rev. Emanuel Cleaver, II, former mayor of Kansas City, was the keynote speaker. He is currently the senior pastor of St. James United Methodist Church. Prior to becoming an ordained minister, Rev. Cleaver served two terms as the first elected African American mayor of Kansas City.
