Useful Terminology

ALIEN - a term used by the U.S. government to refer to non U.S. citizens present in the United States

DEPARTMENT OF LABOR (DOL) - federal agency responsible for promulgating and enforcing U.S. labor laws

DEPARTMENT OF STATE - federal agency responsible for U.S. foreign affairs, including issuance of visas for entry into the United States

EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION DOCUMENT (EAD) - laminated photo identification card issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to verify INS authorized employment eligibility

FOREIGN NATIONAL - a term used the U.S. government to refer to non U.S. citizens outside the United States

IAP-66 - immigration document issued to J-1 Exchange Visitors

I-20 - immigration document issued to F-1 students

I-94 - Arrival/Departure card issued to all foreign nationals upon entry to the U.S. that lists the persons immigration classification and the date by which they must depart the U.S.

IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE (INS) - Federal agency responsible for promulgating and enforcing U.S. immigration law

STATUS - the immigration classification held by aliens while physically present in the U.S.

VISA - an entry stamp issued by a U.S. consulate or Embassy which allows the bearer to enter the United States (the validity period of the visa does not govern the length of time you may remain in the United States after entry)
