Mr. Shannon Smith

Shannon completed his undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University where he majored in Psychology. During that time he participated in a wide range of organizations from the National Pan-Hellenic Council as a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. to working as a peer mentor for incoming college freshman. After serving two years as an Americorps member with City Year Washington DC as a tutor and mentor to elementary and high school students of the DC Public School System he is currently pursuing his Master’s in Higher Education Administration at The George Washington University. His vision for Greek Life is two fold: first noticing how it can be used as a retention tool for students to aid in degree attainment and secondly ensuring that it provides its members with the leadership skills that are necessary to become successful professionals beyond college. Shannon recently worked in the Student Activities department at American University where he was responsible for assistance with the creation, planning, and implementation of various events and workshops aimed at optimizing student leadership potential. Shannon has had the opportunity to present at George Washington University’s Educational Symposium for Research and Innovations on the topic of “Need Based Financial Aid in a Merit Based Atmosphere.” As a member of NASPA he has had the opportunity to attend NASPA’s 2012 Region II Conference in Buffalo, New York and is in the process of joining the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA). His experience of student organizations has spanned across the campuses of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, American University, and now Howard University. He strongly believes in the importance of Greek lettered organizations and the power of collaboration among these groups. Mr. Smith joined the Bison family in 2012 as the Assistant Director of Student Life and Greek Affairs Coordinator.
