<< More Information on the Emergencies Page
In some emergency situations, remaining inside the facility is the preferred option rather than
evacuation. Should a situation arise that require a shelter in place, notification will come from
Campus Police to the University community. In addition to the direct notification by Campus
Police, notification may also be shared via radio, television, internet, and through other communication
devices, such as the new Alert HU and Alert DC, free services that will send alerts to
your mobile device. Register for both services from the link on Howard University Student Affairs,
Campus Advisories website. Members of the University community will be required to
remain in their current facility until the all clear notice has been issued by the Campus Police.
Although it is unlikely that you will ever be required to shelterinplace,
it is beneficial that you
are prepared to do so in an emergency situation. If sheltering in your Residence Hall, please
keep the following items in extra quantities in your room:
- One gallon of drinking water
- Non perishable food items
- Blanket and towels
- Flashlight with fresh batteries
- First aid kit
- Small amount of cash
- Fire extinguisher
- Toilet paper
- Hand sanitizer
- Paper towels
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toothpaste and toothbrushes
- Disposable eating utensils
If you’re sheltering in place in an academic facility, please keep the following on your person:
- Student Identification Card
- Medical Identification Card
- Required medication
- Emergency Contact Information
- Small amount of cash
- How to Shelter in Place
If you’re inside a facility remain in the facility until the “all clear” has been issued. Close and
secure all windows and doors to the facility. If you have access to a telephone, contact the
Campus police at (202) 8067777 or Metropolitan Police using 911, to let them know where
you are located, and how many people are assembled with you. If you have computer and internet
access, log onto the University’s website: http://www.howard.edu for additional information
and instructions. Check your registered mobile device for AlertHU and AlertDC updates.
Look after each other.
