| The mission of the Howard University School of Divinity, as a graduate theological and professional school, is to educate, form and empower leaders to serve the church and the world; to celebrate the religious and cultural heritage of African Americans, the African Diaspora and Africa; and to engage in the pursuit of excellence in ministry, driven by a passion for justice and freedom, and a relentless search for truth. |
Welcome to the Howard University School of Divinity
Since its inception
in 1867, the Howard University School of Divinity (HUSD) is
one of the oldest fully accredited (1940) theological schools
affiliated with the Association of Theological Schools in the
United States and Canada. It is the only African-American
theological school connected to a comprehensive category I
research institution. HUSD has earned eminence for producing
scholarly pastors and religious leaders who are consistently at
the forefront of global societal change. Current programs of study include a
Master of Divinity degree, which is designed to prepare students
for the ministry as pastors and in related fields, including
chaplaincies, Christian education, and staff positions within
denominations. The Master of Arts in Religious Studies is
designed for those interested in teaching, in continuing studies
in religion and theology, or in preparation for advanced
theological education. The Doctor of Ministry degree is for
students who wish to engage in an advanced level of preparation
for ministerial practice. Its primary goal is the
integration of theological and anthropological understandings in
the context of responsible engagement of ministry. Plans are
underway to create a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Religious
Studies with emphasis on biblical studies, African-American
religious studies, and ethics and public policy. The School is housed
in the expansive Benjamin E. Mays Hall, named after one of America's
most prominent leaders during the 20th century. It is located
within
a short distance of the Library of Congress on the University's
East Campus, possessing twenty-two pastoral acres in northeast
Washington, DC. As a learning environment for training tomorrow's leadership
for
the Church and society at large, it is unsurpassed among the nation's
theological schools. Howard University School of
Divinity (HUSD) emphasizes:
- The preparation
of professional religious leaders for service in educational
or
religious institutions
An international
cross-culture inquiry into human values
- Further
graduate study primarily in the religious heritage of
African Americans
A
Great Faculty
| The thirty full and part-time instructors at the School of Divinity are among the most prolific and widely published of any faculty in theological education. In recent years, they have produced and co-produced groundbreaking books in the areas of biblical, theological, ethical and homiletical studies, as well as African-American theological thought. Dr. Cain Hope Felder edited the original African Heritage Bible and has written other noteworthy biblical commentaries. Dr. Delores Carpenter is general editor of the revolutionary African American Heritage Hymnal, and Dr. Cheryl Sanders' work on ethics issues will help to shape the values of generations of thinkers for years to come. |
