Making a Difference Course at Howard - Summer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Howard University School of Divinity (HUSD) Continuing Education Programs!

This innovative educational effort of HUSD provides unique learning opportunities whether you are a clergy or laity, or desire to study as part of a church, religious, and community organization. HUSD continuing education programs consist of one-day courses, seminars, and conferences. These diverse programs challenge participants to expand the contours of ministry leadership and effectiveness through the study of current, relevant topics that apply to the participant’s setting and situation.

If you are currently enrolled in a degree program, updating your professional skills with continuing education credits, or seeking personal renewal and professional enrichment, you will benefit from the learning experiences offered through our programs.

Two essential convictions are rooted in the HUSD mission and guide our commitment to help you to grow and develop as a participant in continuing education programs:

  • In today’s world, clergy and lay leaders must engage in lifelong theological education and continual development of their skills to sustain effectiveness in ministry.
  • Clergy and laity should have opportunities to receive high quality, continued ministerial and theological education and enrichment that will help them develop and manage new ministries.

We invite you to participate in these learning opportunities that are empowering leaders to serve the church and the world and to celebrate the religious and cultural heritage of persons of African descent.

How Continuing Education Works

To help you participate in Continuing Education programs, the following steps have been designed to make the registration process easy and flexible for you, the busy ministry or church leader.  Each course meets on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., for a total of 4 hours of instruction (unless otherwise indicated). There will also be a take-home exam which must be completed and returned within one week of the course. The exam will be worth 1 hour of instruction.

  • First, choose a module (sequence of courses) or individual courses that suit your interest or need.
  • Next, register PRIOR TO THE COURSE DATE by the published deadlines. On-site registration is accepted on a space-available basis. A registration form is enclosed.
  • Courses are scheduled to coincide with HUSD’s academic calendar.
  • Each course is held for one Saturday at the Howard University School of Divinity’s Mays Hall located at 1400 Shepherd Street, NE, Washington, DC 20017.
  • Seminars and conferences are scheduled throughout the year and may be held at other sites. The location will be indicated in the announcements as these opportunities become available.
  • Each 4-hour course qualifies for 0.5 CEU.
  • Courses are offered in "modules" or sequences of courses which are similar in nature. Each module consists of up to 10 courses.
  • *NEW* Students will receive a form certifying their completion of each course they successfully complete. Completion of all courses within a module will entitle students to a continuing education certificate in that area.
  • *NEW* Certificates for course work completed the previous year will be presented at an awards ceremony at the Howard University School of Divinity.

PROGRAM MODULES
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM MODULE
Ministers in Training

This course series is designed to introduce laypersons and new clergy to the process, practice and profession of licensed and ordained ministry. Courses emphasize the serious preparation and understanding of professional ministry, ministry opportunities, and the practice of ministry.

Lay Leaders in Training

This series of courses equips laity for the specialized offices of the church and presents the origins and practices of church leadership to enhance the ministries of lay persons in church settings and the wider community.

Biblical Studies

This series is designed to ensure that the religious educator and minister are well-equipped to understand, teach and communicate the biblical messages. Courses are scholarly as well as practical in nature and will facilitate ways to integrate God’s work into your ministry and daily life. Courses are open to clergy and laity.

EXPANDED!! Homiletics, Sacred Arts and Liturgics

These courses are designed to assist both— the new and seasoned minister— as well as laypersons in understanding the purposes and sacred methods (arts) of worship and preaching from a world view, their theological influences, and design. Taught by accomplished scholars and practicing ministry professionals, these courses will help you to plan, prepare, and hone your crafts in an authentic and practical way for the modern church. Clergy and laity may enroll who want a deeper understanding of the historical significance of music and preaching, particularly within the African American experience.

NEW!! Building the Kingdom: Pastoral Leadership Development and Management

This series is designed for experienced (licensed and ordained) ministers. It provides in-depth instruction in the planning, management and administration of churches, grants and related assets, care of congregations, missions, and related programming in an intensifying business-oriented world. Completion of the Ministers in Training module is NOT necessary for enrollment in these courses. Courses are open to clergy and laity.

Biblical Languages (Refresher and Introduction to Greek and Hebrew)

Did you know that the New Testament was FIRST written in Common Greek, not King James English?! This is a fun course that will seriously equip participants with the skills of biblical translation and interpretation of the original language. If you're planning to enroll in doctoral studies, this is a great refresher course.

NEW!! Living Faith: A Journey in Faith Renewal and Christian Spiritual Practice

This is a four-part series that is designed to be completed in sequential order. Participants will reclaim their spirituality through personalized instruction in the often neglected traditions of Christian spiritual practices. Each person will receive hands-on guidance in moving beyond the superficial life to a deeper spiritual life.

Text Box: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is a good candidate for the continuing education program?

A:  EVERYONE! The following requirements must be met for participation in the continuing education program:

  • completion of a high school diploma (or its equivalent)
  • active participation in ordained or lay ministry at a church or para-church setting
The continuing education program at Howard University School of Divinity is open to:
  • Clergy, church professionals, and lay persons looking for reinforcement and re-certification of their formal training and experience
  • Clergy, church professionals, and lay persons who desire deeper knowledge of scripture, theology and practical ministry, but lack the resources at this time to commit to a seminary degree
  • Clergy, church professionals and lay persons who want to further equip themselves to serve in ministry

Q:  Will I receive the same instruction from HUSD continuing education programs as I would if enrolled in a divinity school or theological seminary?

A:  Continuing education DOES NOT replace seminary training!  It augments completed professional training and exposes individuals to practical aspects of ministry.Q:  How many courses must a person take to earn a certificate or diploma?A:  A certificate of course completion is given for each course that is successfully completed.

  • A continuing education diploma is awarded to participants who successfully complete all courses in a module of study.

Q:  Can I take just one course?

A:  You may take as many courses as you wish at any time. Courses are priced on an individual basis. Discounts are occasionally offered for taking the whole module of courses.Q:  Can I register on-site?A:  Yes, we allow on-site registration for the first two classes, but we prefer that you register by the stated deadlines.

  • If you cannot register in a timely fashion, PLEASE let us know of your intention to take a class by the THURSDAY preceding the class. We must have a minimum number of students to hold classes.

Q:  What equals 1 continuing education unit (CEU)?

A:  One continuing education unit (CEU) represents 10 hours of instruction.Q:  I want to enroll in more than one course but they’re offered at the same time. When will courses be repeated?A:  Courses are repeated on a regular basis as requested and as scheduling permits. Courses also change on a regular basis to provide a greater variety of educational experiences to students.

Q:  What do I do with continuing education units (CEUs)?

A:  Continuing education units (CEU’s), in the most familiar sense, are awarded to those seeking to meet professional in-service training requirements. Many denominations and professions require their clergy and church professionals to earn a certain number of CEUs on a regular basis to maintain and refresh their skills. For those who do not need this requirement, CEUs are a form of dividend for their efforts.

Q:  Can CEUs be used for seminary credit?

A:  CEUs generally ARE NOT transferable for seminary or academic credit for many reasons. These courses do not meet as often, nor is the course work as rigorous as a graduate level course in the seminary or divinity school (the professional preparation for ministry is a graduate level program).  Some community colleges and other colleges accept CEUs for academic credit, usually on the undergraduate level, but each school has its own policy.  In the future, CEUs earned through the HUSD Continuing Education program may be considered in terms of life experience when applying for regular admission to the School of Divinity or Howard University.  However, this will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of Howard University School of Divinity and Howard University, and students will be governed by established University policies and procedures.

Q: Can I use Howard University’s remission of tuition benefit to pay for these courses?

A:  The remission of tuition benefit does not apply to the continuing education courses offered by the School of Divinity.

Q:  Are there discounts given to Howard University employees, senior citizens, or groups?

A:  We offer the following discounts:

  • 20% discount to Howard University or Howard University Hospital employees off each course fee.  YOU MUST ENCLOSE PROOF OF EMPLOYMENT AT HU/HUH TO RECEIVE THIS DISCOUNT.
  • 20% discount for senior citizens (at least 62 and over) off each course fee.  YOU MUST ENCLOSE PROOF OF AGE!
  • 20% discount for groups of AT LEAST 3 PERSONS FROM THE SAME CHURCH FOR THE SAME COURSE.  YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR REGISTRATIONS TOGETHER AND PAY YOUR FEES WITH A SINGLE CHECK.

Q:  What proof will I have to show that I completed continuing education courses?

A:  All students who successfully complete courses receive a certification of course completion or a continuing education CERTIFICATE as appropriate to the completion of their work. The certifies that you have received specialized, practical training in specific areas of ministry to equip you for more effective leadership and service in the church and faith-based communities.

Q:  When do I get my certificates?

A:  Certificates are awarded at a ceremony generally at the end of the academic year. However, if students need proof of completion for their denominational standing before that time, efforts will be made to accommodate that need.

Q:  What should I wear to continuing educaiton courses?

A:  We’re very casual on Saturday mornings!  Wear what makes you comfortable.  Jeans are fine!

Q:  Do you have food service available at HUSD?

A:  We usually provide a light continental breakfast to continuing education students on Saturdays.  Although vending machines are located in the building, we do not have food service at HUSD.

Q:  Where is Howard University School of Divinity?

A:  Remember, Howard University School of Divinity IS NOT LOCATED ON HOWARD UNIVERSITY’S MAIN CAMPUS!  IT HAS ITS OWN CAMPUS AT 1400 Shepherd Street, NORTHEAST.  We are near the Brookland/Catholic University Metro station on the red line.
