History on HU Faculty and Senate

The first available picture of faculty features the medical faculty in 1869-70. General Oliver Otis Howard,
one of the founding members and commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau is featured in this photograph. Howard University was chartered in 1867 and was first named Howard Normal and Theological Institute. The first Bachelor's degree was awarded in 1872.

In January of 1869, Howard started a Law Department under the leadership of John Mercer Langston with six students. One of its faculty, James M. Nabrit, Jr., featured in this 1955 photo (right front), would become dean (1958-1960) and later President of Howard University.

This photo taken in 1950 shows six notable faculty members of Howard University. James M. Nebrit, Jr., who would later become President of HU. Dr Charles Drew, who discovered blood plasma. Sterling Brown, poet, E. Franklin Frazier, the first black president of the American Sociological Association. Rayford W. Logan, Historian and Dr. Alain LeRoy Locke, who is best remembered as a chief interpreter of the Harlem Renaissance.

The Faculty Senate offices are currently located in the CB Powell Building, 525 Bryant Street on the University's campus. The above photos show the CB Powell building in 1915 (left) and 1941 (right) when it was Freedman's Hospital, part of Howard University's Medical School.
