Dear Faculty Colleagues:
I am asking for your participation in a very important survey.
In January 2011, the Howard University Board of Trustees approved the Faculty Senate recommendation to establish an Office of the University Ombudsperson(H.U. Academic Renewal). An ombudsperson is confidential, independent, and neutral. As an outsider, the UO would be free of internal politics at the University and have no vested interest in the outcomes of dispute resolutions other than to serve justice and the public's interest. The Administration has agreed to establish an Ombudsperson for the Faculty as an initial stage of the development of the Office of the Ombudsperson. The Ombudsperson for the Faculty would serve as an independent resource for research, investigation, data collection, and problem resolution for issues that are germane to the faculty.
It is the Faculty Senate’s understanding that an Ombudsperson for the Faculty would operate independently of the Board of Trustees, Administration, and Faculty, consistent with the code of ethics and standards of practice of the International Ombudsman Association, the University and College Ombuds Association, and the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution. The Office of the University Ombudsperson would provide confidential and informal assistance to help resolve issues related to workplace and academic environments.
Thus, I am requesting that you complete the enclosed survey and provide helpful feedback and comments. The questions are designed to assess the faculties understanding of the role and responsibilities of a university ombudsperson. Your input and commentary will be important to assist the Faculty Senate leadership and the Administration, as we work together to determine the scope, structure of the Office of the Ombudsperson, as well as identifying potential candidates to serve in the position of Ombudsperson during the Fall 2012 semester.
I ask that you complete the survey no later than July 29, 2012. If you have any questions, please direct them by email to the following address: email@example.com.
Thank you in advance for your continued participation.
