Federal Direct PLUS Loan for 2010-2011

Dear Student:

Our records indicate that you applied for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan for the 2009-2010. This notice is to notify you that for the 2010-2011 academic year, the U.S. Department of Education is improving the application procedures for students and parents.

Beginning in April, the U.S. Department of Education's new web site, www.studentloans.gov, will enable borrowers to:

  • Complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling
  • Complete a Direct Loan Electronic Master Promissory Note (for Subsidized, Unsubsidized and PLUS)
  • View electronic loan correspondence such as disclosure statement
  • Enable parents (and graduate/professional students) to apply for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan and initiate a credit check online
  • Enable parents to indicate whether they want any remaining credit balance to be paid to the parent borrower or to the student
  • Allow parents (and graduate/profession student borrowers) to request a specific amount they wish to borrow or select a "maximum award indicator" which will notify Howard University to determine the maximum amount that is eligible to be received

If you are planning to apply for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan for the 2010-2011 academic year, we will make the application instructions available to you as soon as the U.S. Department of Education has released authorization for all schools/college next month (April).

NOTE TO DEPENDENT STUDENTS

If you feel that your parent(s) will be denied the Federal Direct PLUS Loan based on credit, your parent(s) must still complete the Federal Direct PLUS Loan process in order to be eligible for any additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan that may be available.

Please be sure to continue to review your email and BisonWeb account for any important updates regarding the Federal Direct PLUS Loan.

Sincerely,

The Office of Financial Aid, Scholarships
and Student Employment
