MSNBC presents MEETING DAVID WILSON

Howard University will host MSNBC’s World Premiere of “Meeting David Wilson”, a young man’s journey
of self-discovery from his upbringing in Newark to his ancestral roots in North Carolina on
Friday, April 11 from 9 p.m. – 12 midnight in Cramton Auditorium.  Coinciding with the 40th anniversary
of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
NBC News will lead a live on-air town hall discussion
following the documentary, hosted by anchor Brian Williams with contributor Tiki Barber.

According to NBC News, “a high-powered panel will be featured following the documentary to tackle
some of the issues raised about African-American men and race in America looking at public perceptions
fueled by media images, unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, and the impact of
the criminal justice system. Featured on the panel will be Howard faculty member Greg E. Carr, Ph.D.,
associate professor of  Afro-American Studies, whose research and work in developing curriculum
and instructional strategies to improve African-American male educational performance at the
elementary, middle, high school and college levels has informed several major educational reform initiatives.

"Meeting David Wilson"

David Wilson is a 28-year-old African-American man from Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in a tough,
urban neighborhood, but managed to navigate his way out of poverty and into the world of news production
in New York City. Now, meet another David Wilson, who is a 62-year-old white man from rural North Carolina.
He grew up in Caswell County, where his ancestors once farmed tobacco. The two men share more
than just a name -- David's ancestors were once enslaved by the other's forebears in the antebellum South.
In "Meeting David Wilson," the two men come face-to-face to confront their storied past. The 90-minute
documentary records the unusual "family reunion" as the New Jersey Wilson family travels back to the
North Carolina plantations to meet the white Wilson's; meeting on the very same plantation where lives
were sacrificed and where racial equality was once unthinkable.  "What you have in the two of us is the
story of two races and two generations honestly talking about the dark cloud of slavery and its
continuing impact on our families and our lives even today," said director David Wilson.
"We intend to ignite a candid and unprecedented conversation about race."

TICKETS REQUIRED: Distribution will start at 10 am on Tuesday, April 8th at the Cramton Auditorium Box Office on a first come, first serve basis.   There is a 2 ticket per person limit and seating is general admission (no reserved seating).

Cramton Auditorium presents a FORD SPECIAL ADVANCE MOVIE SCREENING of
"THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM"

An American teenager who is obsessed with Hong Kong cinema
and kung-fu classics makes an extraordinary discovery
in a Chinatown pawnshop: the legendary stick weapon of the
Chinese sage and warrior, the Monkey King. With the lost relic in hand,

ancient China to join a crew of warriors from martial arts lore on a

AFRICAN DANCE EXPLOSION 2008

Mark your calendars for the 2008 AFRICAN DANCE EXPLOSION! ForceAfrik and GenerationNaija are hosting an African dance competition on April 19th at Howard University’s Cramton Auditorium. This event will be without a doubt one of the BEST African cultural shows ever hosted in the nation. You’ve heard of Step, Hip Hop, and Reggae dance shows but have you ever heard of an African dance competition in the nation’s capital?

The show’s format is very simple: African dance teams from all over North America will be battling to be crowned America’s best African dance crew. The teams will face off in 3 dance categories, Traditional, Contemporary, and Freestyle during which they will show their best choreographed African dance moves to an accredited panel of judges and audiences.

The African Dance Explosion was designed for an audience that no longer believes that one must travel to Africa to experience some of its cultural beauty. This show will give you a taste of Africa that will leave asking for more discoveries on the African culture.

This show is also a highlight of the African Awareness Month (April) that has been declared by DC Mayor Fenty’s Office on African Affairs (OAA). This showcase strengths the outreach program led by the ForceAfrik, GenerationNaija and the OAA in casting a new light on African culture while providing entertainment opportunities.

Part of the proceeds of this show will also be benefiting Living Waters International www.water.cc, an organization that has a mission of re-establishing wells in developing countries.
