Thank you for your interest in the Division of Infectious Diseases  in the Department of Medicine, Howard University School of Medicine.

OVERVIEW

The Infectious Disease training program for physicians at Howard University Hospital is specifically designed to prepare the trainee as an infectious diseases specialist, with special attention to trainees interested in a career in clinical medicine, academic medicine and research.  The trainee is expected to complete certification requirements (12 months clinical training, 24 months continuity ambulatory experience) in two years.

Faria Farhat, MD

Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases

Dr. Faria Farhat is a licensed physician and Board-certified Infectious Diseases specialist.   She completed her medical residency at Howard University Hospital, and currently she is working there as Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases and Assistant Professor in College of Medicine.  Dr. Farhat has had a long term interest in HIV/AIDS, antibiotics, and tropical diseases. 

She has been actively involved in providing medical care to patients with HIV at Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research.  Dr. Farhat is involved in many HIV/AIDS related research projects sponsored by National Institute of Health.  She also has a passion for teaching and training which led to her role as Clinical Director of National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center.

Her current activities also include antibiotic stewardship and Infection control at Howard University Hospital.

Jhansi Gajjala, MD

Assistant Professor

Dr. Jhansi Gajjala is a Board-certified Infectious Diseases specialist. She is licensed to practice in DC and MD. She completed her medical residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Howard University Hospital. Currently she is working there as Assistant Professor in College of Medicine and as attending Physician in Division of Infectious Diseases. She has been actively involved in providing Infectious Diseases consultations and medical care to patients with HIV at Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research (CIDMAR). She has special interest in the fields of HIV/AIDS, Travel Medicine and Critical care patient consultations. She also participates in the committee meetings of Infection control and Antibiotics.

Dr. Gajjala is involved in HIV/AIDS related research projects.


Maya Bryant MD

Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine Howard University Hospital and the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan welcome Dr. Maya Bryant, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine.  

Dr. Bryant is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. She received her medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. She completed internal medicine residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami.   Dr. Bryant’s areas of interest include antibiotic and HIV management, and research in genital ulcer diseases with emphasis on herpes simplex infections. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Bryant as a member of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Faculty and as a direct care provider for HIV Outpatient services through the Center for Infectious Diseases Management and Research (CIDMAR).


Celia J. Maxwell, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Maxwell is the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences and Director of the Women’s Health Institute at Howard University. She is and has been the Principal Investigator of several prestigious projects. They include: The Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research, and The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Barbara Jordan Congressional Scholars Program at Howard University among others. She has been appointed to several national boards or committees including serving as a member of the Healthcare Reform Task Force chaired by then First Lady, Hillary Rodman Clinton, the Office of the Aids advisory Council at NIH and the Institute of Medicine. She was selected for the nationally renowned Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship, serving as a Health Legislative Assistant for Senator Tom Harkin (D. Iowa). In 2008 Dr Maxwell was recognized as one of America’s leading Doctors by Black Enterprise Magazine. Dr. Maxwell obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hunter College and her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Howard University Hospital, and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases/Tropical Medicine at NIH and Howard University

Monika N. Daftary, Pharm.D, AAHIVE is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy (SOP) at Howard Univerisity with a practice site at Howard University Hospital in ambulatory care with a focus in HIV therapeutics. Dr. Daftary received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Howard University School of Pharmacy in 1994.  She then worked as a community pharmacist prior to returning to Howard University to complete her Doctor of Pharmacy that was completed in 1998. Dr. Daftary went on to complete a specialized residency in Ambulatory Care/Managed Care from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

She is the Treatment Adherence Specialist/HIV Clinical Pharmacist at the Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research. She is also a fellow in the Center for Minority Health Services Research at the SOP where she conducts health services research in HIV and other infectious diseases.She has published papers in the area of HIV, HIV & co-morbidities, and pharmacy education.  She is also the Director of Pharmacy  Programs with the Pennsylvania-Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education Training  Program and provides continuing education to providers around the District of Columbia. She also quite involved in teaching at the SOP in a variety of courses including Integrated Therapeutics. She currently chairs the Curriculum and Instructional Resources Committee and Faculty Search Committees.  
 

FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION

The Division of Infectious Diseases will be using ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) to select interview candidates for the upcoming match. Interviews will be held from January through March.

Following an internal ranking of qualified candidates, we will be using the Specialties Matching Service (SMS) offered through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) to match candidates to our fellowship class.
