Our research group has been studying the effect of silicon on the reactivity of nearby functional groups in organosilicon compounds with a view toward use of their reactions in organic synthesis. We are extending this work to the synthesis of host molecules, such as calixarenes, functionalized with silicon groups having a variety of substituents on the silicon, and a study of the ability of these compounds to complex guest molecules.
