BASIC INFORMATION
The Founders Library, located at 500 Howard Place, NW, can be reached from Georgia Avenue and Howard Place, NW, or 4th and Howard Place, NW. The library is readily identified by its clock tower. The nearest Metrorail Stations are the Shaw/Howard University stop and U Street-Cardozo stop on the Green Line. The University is a few blocks to the North. The #70 Metrobuses run along Georgia Avenue while the G2 (P Street-LeDroit Park Line) bus stops at 4th and Bryant Streets, NW.
What are the library hours for Founders Library and the Undergraduate (UGL) Library?

During severe inclement weather, consult Inclement Weather & Closure Notices on the Howard University Web site, or telephone the University operator (all calls to the main switchboard are forwarded to Campus Police after 5:00 PM on weekdays and during weekends and holdidays); or listen to WHUR for latest notices regarding University closing.
When was Howard University established?
Howard University was founded in 1867. The University was named in honor of General Oliver Otis Howard, one of the seventeen founders.
Who was the first African-American president of Howard University?
Mordecai W. Johnson was the first African-American President.

CATALOGS
Where is the card catalog located?
The card catalog is located near the circulation desk in Founders Library. It contains records of materials acquired prior to 1975. Consult Sterling Catalog, for all materials acquired after 1975.
How do I find books or journals in the University Libraries?
To find books or journals in the Howard University library system use the Sterling Catalog. Click on the Sterling icon. You now have a menu screen which lists the access points under which you may search. Once you have the library location(s) and call numbers, check the stack directory.
How do I locate journals that are on microfilm, microfiche, or on cartridge? Sterling will indicate which titles are on microform. Search for your microform title alphabetically in the microform cabinets located in the Current Periodicals Department, UGL. Microform Reader/ Printers are available to print out your articles.
Who may access Sterling, the Online Public Access Catalog from off campus?
Anyone can access Sterling Catalog via the Internet.

Where are the books and the journals located?
Books classified using the Library of Congress Call Number Classification (L.C. Call Numbers), are located in Founders Library. Books labeled "Core Collection" are located on sub-level one in the Undergraduate Library (UGL). Books with Dewey Decimal call numbers are located on sub-level 1 (S1) of UGL. Current journals and microforms are located on the lobby level of the UGL. Bound volumes of earlier journal issues are located on sub-level two.
What is a ready reference book?
Ready Reference books are high-use books, kept behind the Reference Desk, that must be returned within two hours. To use one of these books, you must request the book from the staff and present an identification card to use the book in the library. When you are finished with the book, return it to the Reference Desk so that the item can be returned to the proper location. Neither ready reference books nor regular (open shelf) reference books can be taken outside the library.
Where may I find a copy of the latest issue of a journal and an issue of last month's local newspaper?
Current Periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers, etc) are located in the Undergraduate Library (UGL) on the main level, arranged alphabetically by title. To find out what titles are in the collection, look up your title on Sterling searching by title to find out what issues and volumes the library has. Newspapers are also located in the Current Periodicals Department. Selected titles are kept behind the Current Periodicals Desk and may be used when requested. Earlier volumes are located on sub-level 2 (S2), arranged alphabetically. Read periodicals online at NewsStand.
Where can I find the microfilm reels and the microfiche collections?
Microforms are located in the Current Periodicals Room, UGL. They are stored in the microform cabinets, arranged alphabetically by title.
Where are the videotapes that my professor has on reserve?
Videotape and other media resources are housed in the Media Center located on Sub-Level 1 in the Undergraduate Library.
Where are the CD-ROM workstations located?
CD-ROM searching is available in the Reference Department. To determine which computer database to search for your topic, consult the list entitled CD-ROM Collection for end users in the Founders Library.
Where are theses and dissertations, written by Howard University graduates, located?
The University Archives Department in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center houses theses and dissertations. The Center is located on the first floor in Founders Library.
Where are the encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases located?
The latest editions of general encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases are shelved by call number in the Reference Room. Wikipedia and other encyclopedias are workstation. Atlases may be found online as well as in the Reference Room, G100.3 to G3122 section.
Where is the Patent and Trademark computer and who may use it?
Founders Library is one of 80 Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDL s) in the United States and one of 3 depository libraries in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia region. The other depository libraries are located at the University of Maryland at College Park in the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library (301-405-9157), and in Richmond: James Branch Cabell Library, Virginia Commonwealth University (804-828-1104).The PTDL Cassis computer, which is administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Department, is located in the Reference Room of Founders Library and is available for use by the Howard community and the general public. Copies of patents and trademarks may be found on microfilm located in the Current Periodicals Room of UGL..
FACILITIES
Where are the computers for word processing?
Word processing software is available on the computers in the Media Center located in the Undergraduate Library(UGL). Hundreds of computers are available in the I-Lab @ the Technology Center. The lab is restricted to Howard University students and staff.
Where are the photocopiers located?
Photocopy machines are located on the second floor of Founders Library at both ends of Circulation Hall and on the lobby level in UGL. Photocopiers are also found in the following branch libraries: Architecture, Business, Divibnity, Health Sciences, and Social Work.

- The machines accept only encoded cards.
- Copiers do not accept cash
- Cost of a blank vendcard: $1.00 per card
- Add value for photocopying: $1, $5, $10, $20

Where can I type my term paper?
Typewriters for Howard University students are located in the northeast section of UGL, near the student lounge. Where are the public telephones located?
Public telephones are located on the main level of the Founders Library and in the outer lobby of UGL
What is the shuttle bus schedule?
An intercampus shuttle bus leaves from 6th Street and Howard Place, near Founders Library, every hour on the half-hour.
Where can I find a pair of scissors and a ruler?
The library does not supply items such as pens, pencils, scissors, rulers, calculators, white out, envelopes, stamps, etc. For your convenience, a paper cutter is located near the photocopy machine on the east end of Circulation Hall. A stapler is located on the Reference Desk along with paper clips.
SERVICES
May I borrow regular books from Founders Library if I am not a student, faculty or staff?
You must be currently enrolled at the University or be faculty or staff to be eligible to check out books from the University Libraries. If you are not a current student, faculty or staff, you may use books or journals on the premises but you may not check them out. Coin-operated photocopiers are available for copying articles from books or journals.
How can I speak to a subject specialist about my research question or project?

May I borrow books directly from Washington area libraries?
Students who are cross-registered for a course at a Washington Consortium university may borrow books directly from the host institution library while cross-registered. Graduate students and faculty may borrow materials from CIRLA libraries
May I check out reference books?
Reference books do not circulate. You must use reference books in the reference area. If needed, you may photocopy portions of selected texts.
Where can I find course materials reserved by my instructor?
Course reserves are maintained in UGL and the professional school libraries--Architecture, Business, Divinity, Health Sciences, Law, and Social Work. Many articles are digitized for convenient online viewing any time, any place. Check Sterling for availability and location of all reserves.
Where may we go in the library to eat?
Beverages and light snacks may be consumed in the Student Lounge located at the northeast end of the Undergraduate Library on the Main Level. Food consumption is prohibited elsewhere in the library complex. Smoking is prohibited throughout the building.
