"Our Status"
Byrd Heather

Merely movement
or progression?
Success
Or deception?
How much have we achieved
if common stereotypes are still believed?
It seems that for every strong, black man,
there is another caught in society’s quicksand.
Have blacks really progressed?
Can slavery ever be put to rest?
Now, I can attend your white college,
but you will still doubt my knowledge.
Racial slurs don’t come out your mouth,
but the Confederate Flag still flies over the South.
You say there are blacks on the board,
but who owns the company?
Am I supposed to be satisfied,
because you throw me a little money?
Our society is attempting to be politically correct,
but that only means you can’t make a direct threat.
We have blacks in the Senate,
but no matter how much we vote,
racism increases by the minute.
You say that Bin Laden is bad,
but have you looked into your past?
Hundreds of years of oppression,
but you’re only concerned with the economic recession.
Until the hearts of men and women truly change,
including everyone as equals,
we will not make progress but only mere movement as a people
