Online access to many
indexes/abstracts
& fulltext
e-journals,
whether through Sterling online
catalog
or the Library Website, is
restricted by vendor license agreements
to connections within the HU Network
(HU-Net).
There
are two quick ways for authenticated off-campus access to vendor-restricted library
databases and e-journals, whether they appear in the Databases list, an HUL webpage, or in Sterling:
| 1.
Access through the Library's
Proxy Server

| How
do I use the Proxy service? |
You
will need access to the Internet
as well as the user name and password
associated with your ISAS-issued
e-mail account. If you are a current
Howard student, faculty or staff
member and you don't have such
an account, please contact ISAS: Faculty & Staff help, 202-806-2020; Student help, 202-806-0660. |
| Benefits |
You can access all Web-based library databases and electronic journals just as if you were on campus.
You do not have to tie up a phone connection if you already have a broadband connection (cable modem or DSL line).
You can access all Web-based library resources from computers at any off-campus location—home, office, another university, public library, etc.
|
| Disadvantages |
Your cost, if you want to subscribe
to a broadband connection (cable
modem or DSL line). |
 |
| 2.
Dial-up Access through HU-Net |
| What
is HU-Net Account and how do I
use it? |
HU-Net is a free service that
allows current HU faculty, students
and staff members to dial in to
a local number (202 area code)
and access the Web just as if
you were on campus.
You will need your HU-Net username
and password, a computer with
a modem, an ordinary phone line,
and a browser (such as Internet
Explorer, Netscape). If you are
a current Howard student, faculty
or staff member and you don't
have such an account, see instructions,
or call:
-- Faculty & Staff help, 202-806-2020
-- Student help, 202-806-0660
|
| Benefits |
You can access all Web-based library
databases and electronic journals
just as if you were on campus. |
| Disadvantages |
Unless you have 2 phone lines,
your phone will be busy while
online.
If the 202 area code is long-distance
for you, remote access can be
very expensive. |
