Faces & Voices IV
AN ANTHOLOGY OF VERSE AND PROSE

Warning
Kenrya Rankin

When I am an honest person I shall hurt people's feelings
With rapid-fire words and spiteful looks,
And I shall tell people the truth
And mean it, and say kiss my ass.
I shall do what I want
And speak without thinking
And never fib
And make up for the politeness of my youth.
I shall go out in a crowded place
And tell who's ugly
And dismiss the phonies who smile in my face.

You can tell someone her baby's ugly and not feel bad,
And laugh when someone falls down the stairs
Or tell that girl that you don't like her
And hit her if you want.

But now we must be polite
And tell white lies
And consider the feelings of others.
We will have friends and make them smile.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am an honest person who hurts people's feelings.
