Faces & Voices 4

By Avion A. Gray

Half a dozen years have past…
At last…
So fast…
But you still occupy my thoughts
That ephemeral moment right before sleep ensues
That transient period when the sun warms the dew
I think of you
Just me and you
We counted in unison
On that shiny silver watch…
You taught me to tell…
The time…we rhymed
Times I almost fell…
You caught me
That huge sterling bell
On your bicycle that brought you to me
Things you could fix
Times you wanted to give me a lick-ing
I showed you the smile
The one you loved
You knew all my tricks…
And laughed at my kicks
The cruelty of fate
I ate from your plate
Can’t believe you’re ‘Late’…
Don’t make me wait…
I see your smiling face…
How happy I was back then
Grandma’s true friend
A helping hand you would lend
My cuts you would mend
You would call my name
Whenever you came
The endless card games
I called you names
You feigned anger
Can’t take this any longer
Thought I would’ve been stronger
The midday naps
Your collection of caps
I had a home in your lap…
It comforted me…it secured me
I was an extension of you…
And you – of me
We were two of a kind
‘Til you left me behind
Years of laughter
You were like my father…from God
You never had your own…
So I was your daughter
Like pestle and mortar…
We mixed memories together
I was the apple of your eye
How will I get by?
Your pride and joy
Yo estoy…
Siempre contigo
You dreamt of living to see me grow
You believed in the seeds I sowed
You said I would be somebody…someday
Now you’re up there lying on a cloud
I’m telling you now…
This is my vow…
I will not fail to make you proud
Why didn’t I stay?
On that wretch’d day
To hear what you had to say…
To say what I had to say
I had to go…one kiss…one hug…so fast
Had no clue it would’ve been the last
I never got to tell you
But somehow…I knew you knew…
I know you know
The angels told me so
If I knew then what I know now
Everyday I would’ve shown you how…
How could it be? Could someone tell me?
The heart that brought so much love to my life
Took your life
Why did you give up so easily?
What about me?
Why didn’t you fight?
You rushed toward the light
I can blow it in a kiss
Put it in a note
Set it to float…
Out to sea
Write it in a letter
Stamped to eternity
Place it on an eagle’s wings…
I can do many things
All to say one thing
Better late than never…
I’ll feel it forever…
I love you
Estaras siempre en mi corazon
