“A Dream Deferred”
By Tracy Hunter

Have you ever had a dream, something you really wanted to do
And every time you thought of it, you knew it was right for you

Have you ever had a dream, an idea, a goal, a plan
The perfect choice, the perfect solution, right in the palm of your hand

Then, before you knew it, your dream began to slip away
You sat and watched it disappear, bit by bit, day by day

You worked hard and planned well, the effort was definitely there
The dream you had was within your reach, it was something you could bear

So why is this A Dream Deferred? A “Runaway Dream” I say
You’ll probably find you answer in the next few lines
My story, my dream, my way

It was two years ago, and there was a lot on my mind
It was time for my peers and me to make some decisions
Of course I didn’t want to be left behind

I thought I had made the perfect choice about what college I would attend
I couldn’t wait to share my news with my family and my friends

I shared my decision with everyone; the news was quickly spread
And just as quickly as word got out, my excitement began to shed

You see, not everyone agreed that my choice was right for me
They gave me all the reasons why my dream just couldn’t be

For months I watched my dream as it slowly slipped away
A Dream Deferred because I listened to what everyone else had to say

I can’t say that I caught my dream, although I eventually tracked it down
It had become so distant to me that I wasn’t sure what I had found

After some minor adjustments, a new dream rang loud as a bell
The same problems people had before were there this time as well

This time I was determined not to let my dream get away
I decided that it was my life, my dream, and I was going to do this my way

The message here is simple, sometimes only you know what is best for you
And when it’s time to pursue a dream only you need to be satisfied with what you do

If your dream is meant to be, there is something that must be clear
With what God has in store for you, let no man interfere

So if you ever find that your dreams are slowly slipping away
Remember that it’s all up to you
Your life, your dreams, your way
