See if you can find your name using one of the links below.  Look up your first or middle name as well as your family ("surname").  Check  50states.com (under "Genealogical Resources: ROOTS-L") to find when persons with your surname first moved into the state where you were born. E-mail your counselor and summarize what you learned about your name(s).
