The Liaison Program

Faculty members and librarians have a joint responsibility for developing the library collection. The liaison librarian answers questions about the library and informs faculty of library services, programs and resources. The faculty liaison provides information from the academic community regarding issues that affect the library and library services. The program formalizes and enhances communication among faculty and librarians.

Some of the intended goals of the program are to:

  • Identify faculty perceptions and needs
  • Increase student and faculty use of the library
  • Improve the quality of library collections
  • Provide materials pertinent to courses in a timely fashion

Role of the liaison librarian
To support the teaching and research needs of his/her assigned departments/schools by:

  • Informing faculty of new resources and services available to them and their students.
  • Providing orientation to new faculty and students.
  • Consulting with faculty about specific teaching and research needs.
  • Designing and conducting general and course integrated instruction in the use of library and Internet resources.
  • Providing in-depth reference assistance to both faculty and students.
  • Informing faculty of the library budget for the fiscal year.
  • Coordinating materials selection and management-- books, journals, databases, and other materials.
  • Developing subject-specific websites.

Role of the liaison faculty member
To act as a contact to facilitate communication between the library and his/her school/ department.
In addition, the liaison faculty member should provide the liaison librarian with the following:

  • Departmental teaching and research priorities, changes and trends.
  • Faculty changes.
  • Announcements of faculty meetings to which the liaison librarian is invited to attend.
  • Information about new course and program offerings.
  • Annual reports.

Role of the faculty member
A faculty member can facilitate the liaison program by:

  • Recommending materials for purchase.
  • Providing course syllabi so that the library can make available the resources needed.
  • Working with the liaison librarian in designing library assignments for classes.
  • Alerting the liaison librarian of class assignments in advance.
